PUSD Core Lit

The following are the CORE Literature titles for grades K-12.  These titles may be used for classroom instruction for the FIRST time at the grade level designated on the list. 

This means that before the designated grade level, the book will NOT be:

• taught
• read aloud
• placed on a teacher-generated recommended reading list
• seen on video
• used in a small group, large group, or literature circle setting.

These titles have been reserved or insured for the particular grade level where listed.  However, any of these books may be read and enjoyed at a higher grade level.  Students may, on their OWN, choose any book, regardless of grade level, whether on this list or not for INDEPENDENT reading.  If a student chooses a CORE literature book for individual reading during Reader's Workshop, the teacher may conference with the student on that book.  It is not necessary to purge CORE titles from lower grades' classroom libraries

As there are many, many wonderful books to choose from, it is expected that teachers will honor the grade level designations of these books.
