Presentation Sign up- Write your name next to the topic you would like to present to the class. Do NOT erase someone else's name.
Upload your powerpoint slides by Thursday, May 19th, 8am -5 pts if you cannot follow these directions.
If you are not ready by your sign up day, late points will be taken off
Be respectful of other students presenting.
Individual Presentations Requirements
A) Powerpoint Slides
1) Minimum of 9 slides, you can have more 2) Slides are NOT clustered with a lot of text 3) Most slides have at least one diagram, graph, or picture/image, 4) Has a summary slide with 3 main points, 5) Title and Reference slide
B) Description of Disease/Syndrome I
Includes: 1) History of the disease (i.e. who discovered it, or in history when was the earliest it was recorded) 2) General description of the disease, 3) body symptoms, 4) statistics of who has the disease either in the U.S. or abroad, 5) solutions and/or treatments (if there are none, then discuss this and why there are none). 6) Clinical trials or current research being done.
C) Biology Depth of Knowledge
1) Description of how the disease/syndrome is caused biologically (i.e. chromosomal abnormality, defect in protein, inefficient amount of hormone etc.) If you don't know how your disease is caused, the you need to ask Ms. Tam for help. If you don't incorporate this into your presentation, you will be asked about this after your presentation. 2) How this defect in #1 gives someone symptoms of the disease. For example: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked disorder and affects males. There is a mutation in the dystrophin gene located on the X chromosome which makes dystrophin protein. Dystrophin protein stabilizes the muscles by connecting actin cytoskeleton of each muscle to the basal lamina or the extracellular matrix.
D) Presenting in Class Mechanics
While presenting 1) Students cannot be reading from notes but should know the material well enough to make eye contact with the audience 2) Gives presentation in a professional serious manner 3) the presentation must last a minimum of 5 minutes 4) Demonstrates he/she is prepared for this presentation 5) ABSOLUTELY - students will respect and be in solidarity with patients who have the disease/syndrome
